Blue Carbon is carbon captured by the oceans. 83% of the total global carbon circulates in the oceans of which the half is stored in the sediments of coastal ecosystems like mangroves, salt marshes and seagrasses. Due to the oxygen free conditions of the sediments, the carbon remains stored for millennia. When protected or restored, blue carbon ecosystems sequester and store carbon.

But when degraded or destroyed, these ecosystems emit the carbon they have stored during centuries into the atmosphere and oceans. The coastal ecosystems can become sources of greenhouse gases. Experts estimate that as much as 1.02 billion tons of carbon dioxide are being released annually from degraded coastal ecosystems, which is equivalent to 19% of emissions from tropical deforestation globally.

Maintaining and increasing healthy coastal ecosystems are far out the most effective carbon climate mitigators.

Worldview is specialized in Mangrove restoration and conservation. In cooperation with Pathein University and Myeik University, Worldview developed new and effective planting methods maintaining the highest quality. Our projects have reached a record high survival rate of plants of 96%

Test planting on mud flats, grass land and other unused land has been successfully completed with excellent results. This has created new potentials in maximizing mangrove`s unique ability to mitigate and store CO2, with up to 5 times more climate gases than terrestrial trees.

In most of our projects, Worldview work in degraded mangrove areas. In 2021 we will add the first mangrove conservation projects. All projects we develop in cooperation with VERRA and vulnerable coastal communities

Worldview is working to realize the blue carbon potential with the following approaches:

  • More planting of mangroves, both in degraded areas as on mudflats
  • Conservation of the remaining mangrove forests in Myanmar
  • Conservation of seagrass meadows
  • Conservation of coral reefs
  • Seaweed planting and harvesting
  • Kelp planting and harvesting.
  • Marine sanctuaries for protection of endangered dugongs, sea turtles and other endangered species.

Please get in touch to discuss your tree planting or blue carbon credit needs.
